It sounds like it ought to belong in the pages of a romantic novel
doesn't it? Although if this was a novel then no doubt it would have
had a happier ending. But this isn't a novel and life isn't like that.
Sometimes no matter what you want with your heart, you know you can't
have with your head... and I always have tended to listen more to my
head.
Sometimes love just isn't enough

"Sit down both of you" Silverthorn said quietly. Surprised they did
so. "You wanted explanations, fine. You can have an explanation. Just
don't blame me if you don't like them and don't interrupt. This is hard
enough as it is." For a moment she was silent, gathering her thoughts.
"None of the things I said before were exactly a lie. I arrived on
Paradelos because I had been sent there to assassinate your father.
He'd managed to annoy some powerful people and they wanted the irritant
removed. I was simply the one they hired to do the job. It soon became
obvious that it would be the easiest of contracts to fulfil. Luis
always was fairly good with security but there is a way of bypassing
most things if you look for it. To be honest the precise details don't
matter. We met and we started to talk. It started being just the job
but, to my surprise, I found I was actually enjoying myself. That was
how it all started.
She paused again. Her eyes were fixed on her hands that lay clasped on the tabletop.
"The contract was called off when the backer died himself. That
night I packed my bags to leave the island only for him to arrive. When
he demanded to know where I was going I told him. I explained why I was
there, the lot. He said he didn't care, that he wanted me to stay
anyway. That was the first night we shared a bed." She sighed.
"I knew it couldn't last though. If it was only my profession we could
have worked around it but elf-human relationships rarely work out. The
lifespans are just too different. I'd made up my mind to leave when I
discovered I was pregnant. At first I think I went into shock. I didn't
know what to do. The reasons for leaving were still valid, wishing
things were otherwise wouldn't change them, but how could I bring a
child into my world? What sort of life would that be for an infant,
being dragged from one battlefield to another? So I left you with your
father. It seemed the best thing for everyone."
The elf ground to a halt. Her gaze lifted for the first time to meet Fionna's.
"So, you see, I did choose to leave you. I made the decision."

Every time you turn around
You wear another face
Every time I look away
I find a hiding place
If you knew me like you knew him
You would know just how I feel
Slipping through someone's fingers
Falling under someone's wheels
It's easier to walk away
Better off to face the facts
When love holds you up for ransom
Walk away and don't look back
Never seen you looking back through
Smiling eyes and tears
Never knew you holding on to
Memories and fears
Just release me I can't take it
Can't you see a change has come
Strangled by infatuation
Buried under someone's thumb
It's easier to walk away
Cover and fade to black
When love scars and leaves you branded
Walk away and don't look back
Every time you turn around
You wear another face
Every time I look away
I find a hiding place
